Discovery Channel Films Scale-Model Maglev

August 6, 2008

For their upcoming series on the future of technology, "Next World", the Discovery Channel visited LaunchPoint Technologies Inc., to document and film Applied Levitation's scale model maglev train. The series premieres August 6, 2008, at 8 p.m. The one-hour segment on the future of trains is currently scheduled to air later this year.

The vision of Applied Levitation's founder and CEO, Jim Fiske, the scale model maglev train was taken from concept to working prototype in just under six months by LaunchPoint Technologies' Senior Systems Engineer, Geoff Long. The prototype system uses their patented Stabilized Permanent Magnet (SPM) suspension technology which is easily scaled to accommodate larger and heavier vehicles for the transport of passengers or freight.

For the first time ever in the development of maglev transportation, Applied Levitation's SPM technology will permit maglev transport vehicles to quickly and easily change tracks or guideways without the need for large mechanical switching mechanisms such as those used by maglev trains operating in Germany and Japan. With its instant magnetic guideway switches, SPM technology significantly reduces infrastructure costs and improves both efficiency and routing flexibility. Mile for mile, an SPM maglev guideway can be built for about the same cost as one lane of freeway with twenty times the carrying capacity.
